FLORIDA — Communities across Florida joined the nation Friday in marking the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Gov. Ron DeSantis directed flags of the United States and State of Florida to be flown at half-staff at all local and state buildings, installations and grounds from sunrise to sunset Friday.

The attacks killed 2,977 people in New York City, at the Pentagon and near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

DeSantis participated in a remembrance ceremony in Clay County, where first responders, local officials and members of the community gathered to honor those killed.

Numerous other remembrance events were held across Florida, including memorial walks, stair climbs and ceremonies honoring the first responders who died while responding to the attacks.

Friday marked exactly 25 years since hijacked planes struck the World Trade Center and Pentagon and United Airlines Flight 93 crashed in Pennsylvania.

Patriot Day is observed annually on Sept. 11 in remembrance of those killed in the attacks.
